In the days leading up to February 25, 2010, there were a few odd interactions in Rancho Bernardo

community park located in San Diego County. As a woman was walking her two dogs along a trail

in Rancho Bernardo community park, she was stopped by a tall, slightly overweight man,

who warned her about the rattlesnakes along the path. After a brief conversation,

she informed him that her dogs were trained to detect rattlesnakes and she politely ended the

conversation. Another woman was stopped on her way to the two-mile marker on the park's trail

by a strange man who told her to be careful of the rattlesnakes and he had one of them near his

feet. She spoke to him for a few minutes, then continued her run. After she turned around to

head back to her car, she saw rattlesnake closer to the trail, set up as though was on purpose.

On the evening of February 25, 2010, Kathy Osborne, a psychiatric nurse whose son was recovering

after one of his many psychotic breaks, impatiently waited for him to come home. She knew he needed help
