it being the middle of spring.

The afternoon promised assemblons of warmth, so Gareth decided it was the perfect time

to visit his best friend across the road.

He hoped they could play together on the quiet street they shared as they had every day

since winter ended.

The boy he was looking for was a year-old Tyler Richardson.

The Richardson family, Debra, Mark, Tyler, and 12-year-old Jasmine lived in a meat-gray weather

board home with a gabled roof and trimmed lawn.

The perfect picture of a middle-class family, but on that spring day, what lay behind

their front door was anything but picture perfect.

As Gareth approached the home, he noticed the blinds were still closed, and when he knocked,

there was no answer.

It was a Sunday, and the family would usually be back from church by then, and the car

was parked in the driveway so they were definitely home.
