I'm Hello and welcome back to Sochiology 101.

You may be thinking to yourself, why am the world late and are you doing another broadcast today?

You already did one earlier today.

Well, I wanted to respond specifically to a comment that was brought up by Brenton

Stanfield, one of our local Calvinist buddies, who often posts in the side chat while we're recording.

And he asked about John chapter 6, verse 29, because I was making the point, using John Piper's own

article from the 1970s, mind you, that faith is not a work. It's certainly not a meritorious work of the law by which we earn or merit salvation,

which I think, hopefully most Calvinists would agree with, including Brenton,

Brenton.

But what he was trying to say is, well, John 629 calls faith a work.

Therefore, we should call it a work, which would ultimately mean that we're saved by grace through a work. Now, that work may be effectually caused by God on Calvinism, but it's still a work, and

who would say that we're saved by grace through a work?

Even Calvinists would want to, I would think, avoid that kind of vernacular, which is why I think

that he's misunderstood what Jesus was saying in John chapter 6, verse 29 29 and I wanted to go over that because I really didn't take the time

to go over it in the broadcast thoroughly and so I wanted to go over that a little

bit today just because I was I was pondering it throughout my day. This is the iron

sharpening iron that I think friends can do for each other. When we asked each other

questions, sometimes we ponder those

questions for a while and we begin to think, okay, well, 629, John 629 does seem to call faith of work.

Maybe he has a point here. And so I wanted to be fair to him and look at the text if we could

together. So let's look at it. Here's John chapter 6, beginning of verse 28 there. It says,

they ask him, what must we do to do the works God requires? In other words, what works do we do to get
