Hi, and welcome to Jesus Over Everything, a five-day-a-week variety show that mixes encouragement, the Bible, practical how-toes, and fantastic guests for the listener on the go.

0:10.1

I'm Lisa Whittle, and I welcome you to just five minutes with me, which I trust and pray will be five minutes well spent.

0:15.7

I want to talk about something today that I think a lot of us struggle with, the way we see things.

0:20.5

Let's be honest,

0:21.2

we all see things our way from our perspective and our lens. But what if we aren't seeing

0:26.2

things completely clearly? Would we want to change it if we were in fact seeing things wrong?

0:32.7

Let's get into it. So I want to pose that question again and you to think about it for a minute because

0:42.9

it's important to consider, I think. If you knew you were seeing things sort of in a skewed way,

0:48.5

would you want to know it and correct it? I think a lot of times we say we would, but in reality

0:53.2

we like to hold on to our points of view and

0:55.6

perspectives, and we don't like to even be open to a different point of view if it challenges

1:00.4

ours. But I think sometimes what we don't realize is often that is fear-driven. If we let go of our

1:07.0

view, we unravel a whole bunch of backstory and feelings we don't want to deal with. So we call

1:13.0

it perspective and we keep believing it's right no matter what. And then sometimes I don't think we even

1:18.0

realize we have a skewed lens, but it comes out in a way we're triggered, which by the way,

1:22.4

as a big red flag, we may be seeing things from a lens that isn't completely clear. I got an email not long ago from someone who was upset by something I had posted, and I know this person, not well, but through some mutual friends.

1:35.0

And more importantly, I know some of this person's backstory of some hurt they were caused by someone in ministry.

1:41.1

I knew and recognized immediately by what was said that it really had nothing

1:46.2

to do with me, the things that were said in this email. The assessment of the person wasn't correct,

1:51.6

but it was all based on feelings from the past that were displaced sort of onto me because

1:57.0

something I wrote hit a nerve. I got it. I wasn't offended, a little put off if I'm being

2:02.7

honest, but I simply responded to the email and said, listen, I know what happened in the past and I am so
