Summary

In this episode Joanna Leidenhag explores the fascinating nature of consciousness and its implications for how we understand ourselves and the world around us. She challenges traditional views that separate mind and body, and instead advocates for panpsychism, an understanding that she believes better fosters environmental awareness, deeper respect for diverse cultures and a view of existence that is interconnected and alive.

After the interview Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Joy Brooks try to get their heads around the pros and cons of the various models of consciousness and ponder how panpsychism might shape their evolving faith.

Interview starts at 14m 19s

The Welcome back to Nomad Podcast. I'm your host Tim Nash, and this is your other host. It's Joy Brooks.

0:42.6

Hello. How does the beloved listener find you today, Joy, sheltering under a heated blanket?

0:47.5

I do have the blanket on. It's not currently heating, though, because, yeah, the temperature's not too bad here.

0:56.2

So, yeah, I'm doing okay. I don't wish to kick things off being too negative but I have before recording this I did have a

1:02.2

particularly unsatisfactory apple oh yeah you know the flowery ones that's such a disappointment

1:08.1

isn't it so disappointing because it was red and shiny.

1:11.9

Yeah.

1:12.5

Looked like it was going to be crisp and tangy, but no, it was flowery.

1:17.3

And yeah, the only other thing I can compare it to is, and if you're in a cat, you'll

1:22.2

understand this, is when a cat walks past and you put your hand down to stroke it, and

1:26.4

somehow it's in that

1:27.7

don't touch me, I'm too good for you mood. And it just dips its back ever so slightly so

1:32.7

you feel the top of its fur but you don't actually get a stroke. And honestly, it's that same

1:38.1

ha ha, something's incomplete and I don't know how to solve it. It's that same feeling.

1:43.9

Yeah, I can't relate

1:44.7

to that, but I can definitely relate to the apple because sometimes you bite into an apple and it's

1:49.4

just almost overwhelming, isn't it? The crunchiness and the sweetness. I had an apple just a couple

1:54.9

of days ago and it was almost too much. It was so delicious. And then other times you buy it into it and it just like falls apart, doesn't it?

2:01.6

And you're just like, oh no.

2:03.2

Yeah.

2:03.8

I mean, I don't rate apples, even a good apple.
