Summary

#5. Jim Carrier is a contributing editor for Cruising World magazine, and a fellow Allied Seabreeze owner! His boat, a yawl like Arcturus, is called Ranger. Jim sailed it across the Atlantic with ARC Europe several years back, and his experience with the boat on that long ocean passage convinced Andy & Mia to buy their Seabreeze. Andy and Jim discuss sailing the Seabreeze and Jim's career as a writer. He's done far more than just sailing journalism, writing newspaper columns, advocating for Civil Rights in Alabama and writing about Hurricane Katrina. Check him out on byliner.com - he's among an A-list of writers, including Jon Kraukauer, famous for 'Into the Wild' and 'Into Thin Air.' Thanks Jim!

Today we've got Jim Carrier chatting with us on the podcast. I actually didn't record this today.

This was a few weeks ago when I was still in Sweden and I talked to Jim from his home out in the Midwest.

0:23.1

Anyway, Jim is a fellow Allied Sea Breeze owner. His boat is also a yawl, like my

0:28.9

arch tourists that we have over in Sweden right now. And Jim and I actually first got in touch

0:35.5

when we were looking at buying the sea breeze,

0:37.7

and I had emailed Jim to ask him a few things about the boat,

0:40.8

knowing that he had sailed the boat across the Atlantic to the Mediterranean

0:44.2

a few years prior to us buying the boat,

0:47.2

and kind of just wanted to get his ideas on the seaworthiness of the boat as an ocean-going boat.

0:52.3

And it was his email that sort of intrigued me enough to say,

0:56.2

okay, this boat's going to work for us, we're going to buy it. So I've had email contact with Jim now

1:00.8

and then, and I got in touch with him about doing the podcast because I know he's also a writer.

1:05.5

And I knew he wrote for Cruising World. He's a contributing editor for cruising world. But what I

1:10.0

didn't know was that he's

1:10.9

written for newspapers and magazines and civil rights groups and and everything and he's much much much

1:17.4

more of a of a writer than uh than i can even consider myself um you know sailing writing is one thing

1:23.8

but jim's a real writer uh So we talked a lot about that.

1:32.4

Jim's got a new website that he's putting stuff on called byliner.com.

1:37.5

One of the things we talked about was how difficult it is in the new media society we live in for writers to get paid for their work now that newspapers and magazines are sort of going

1:42.3

away.
