So good to be here. So today we've been marking the topic which will be the story of the woman caught an adultery that we find in the

Gospel of John chapter 7 verse 53 that runs all the way through chapter 8 verse 11. How does that sound? That sounds great.

Okay so let me provide a little bit of background because there are two background

issues, one personal and the other one textual. The personal issue is this, that way

back in 1975 as a newly enrolled freshman at Grove City College, I was taking a course from Dr. Vanticapelli fresh out of Princeton where he'd gotten his newly minted PhD.

And the course was on biblical ideas and my first major paper was on the woman caught in adultery.

And so this takes me way, way back because what I encountered back then was a divided house, you might say, that is a lot of division and confusion.

You know, on the one hand, the most popular approach to the story was you see Jesus compassion

and how easily and quickly he sets aside the rigor of the mosaic law.

Well that just struck me as highly alike.
