Hello and welcome to the midpoint.

So today we're going to address an issue which I think we can probably all relate to in some way.

0:12.0

No matter how restrained you are, I'm guessing like me, you found yourself spending more time than you'd like or feel good about scrolling nonsense on all sorts of social media, whether it's TikTok or Instagram. It's all mindless, isn't it? And you think to yourself, oh my gosh, I only put my phone up to pay a bill. And there you are an hour later looking at videos of cats. So I think you're going to enjoy hearing from my guest today. Jess Butcher MBE. And Jess was the co-founder back in the day

of Blipper. And in 2012, she was listed as Fortune's 10 most powerful women entrepreneurs. She was a

0:44.9

woman in demand in the world of tech. So why does she now describe herself on her Instagram bio

0:50.7

as an award-winning tech entrepreneur in a past life.

0:58.4

In many ways, you'll find out today she is the ultimate poacher-turned gatekeeper.

1:03.9

Her new focus and passion in life is getting us off our phones through scroll aware and doing something more soulful.

1:06.3

She's on a mission to push society and indeed the world to re-evaluate the way we use our phones. Not to ban them,

1:12.0

not to put them down completely, just think a bit differently. Some of the statistics are quite

1:16.5

frightening. On average, people scroll for three hours a day. And currently, the average 18-year-old is on

1:22.4

course to spend 93% of their spare time in their life scrolling. No doubt we have a problem.

1:29.3

But is it possible to get the genie back in the bottle?

1:31.3

And as someone who knows all about the algorithms that get us hooked,

1:35.3

how does she think we can change human behaviour?

1:38.3

Let's meet Jess.

2:03.1

At Jess, welcome to the midpoint. In your introduction, I've said that you're now kind of poacher-turned-gamekeeper in some ways. You were one of the pioneers in terms of tech women, in Forbes hot lists and an MBE for your services to the industry.

2:08.7

When did the game-changing kind of eureka moment come to you that all was not well?

2:15.0

I wish I could say there was one eureka moment. It's that sense of sort of creeping unease about what you're working on that happened. And I guess parenting is that

2:18.5

great trigger for so much in life, isn't it? You know, I had three and four years at the very

2:22.9

height of my journey in building very, very ambitious technology. So I was on planes the whole time

2:30.1

and I, you know, it wasn't around as much as I would have liked to have been. And I guess I was
