Summary

The Tennessee Titans traded for edge rusher Jermaine Johnson on Thursday and some fans are taking that as a sign the Titans will not go edge with the first pick in the NFL Draft, but that is a total misread of not only Johnson's impact on the defense, but also how the Titans should be approaching the pick. The Titans may have added a rotation edge, but edge rusher is still a major need and this trade shouldn't affect how the Titans look at the pick. Whether they are interested in Jeremiyah Love, Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon or Sonny Styles, there interest level should not be affected by adding Johnson. Where you could see an affect though is WHICH edge rusher they target in free agency or the draft from a stylistic standpoint. Johnson is a physical edge who is good against the run, but he isn't a pure speed guy and isn't super comfortable kicking inside either. If anything, Johnson is similar to David Bailey and could lead the Titans to Rueben Bain or Arvell Reese, but that doesn't HAVE to be the case.
