He's been a friend for a long time, and he's just super easy and fun to talk to, and his ideas are

always intriguing. Here he is on the rise of Trump. As somebody with a PhD in American history, I've

been wondering, is Trump a moment in wondering is Or is this who we've always been and Trumpism will continue on because it has been here since

day one and he just there was nothing new about Trump and you know when this was like when he was just on the

verge of election I think and that was a kind of controversial thing because the

United States likes to think of itself in these particular disciplined, refined,

democratic, mature ways, like all the adjectives that we apply to this country

have to be pointing to its

exceptionality and to say that this person who is vulgar, racist, ignorant,

sexist, misogynistic, right, all these kind of things, incompetent, that he's a reflection

of what this place is, seemed to be a bridge too far for people.

And I thought that he was more right than wrong.

So there are some things about him that are unique and in that we haven't seen the kind of blatant hypocrisy.

We've seen a fair level of hypocrisy,

but we haven't seen the wholesale auctioning

of values that people professed on the public square in exchange for support of this one person.

Like the Christian Right, which was constantly harping on the personal lives of people, and

they found themselves not only reconciled with but

adamantly supporting and defending and in love with this person who's been

married three times who has a long track record of infidelity,

who has cheated on his wife of porn stars, like all the most tawdry kinds of details that
