Not only has he been a towering figure in literature since his debut novel in 1984, Bright Lights, Big City, which was made into a 1988 film

of the same name. But he's been a towering figure in ways beyond that. He's become a sort of

cultural icon, especially here in New York, in a way that very few writers, especially these days,

are. I can't name any writers for whom the Daily Mail and the

New York Post are interested in their private lives. So, Jay, it's a pleasure to have you in here

because we are interested in all this. So thanks for coming in. Not always a good thing, but

well, your drink choice, fittingly, is a bottle of crystal, which I will get started on here.

Yeah, well, I just think it's always a good idea to start things with champagne.

That is a great philosophy for life, I think.

I've got to go with that mantra.

Yeah, I just think the evening would always go pretty well for you.

Is that the usual way?

If you go out to dinner, one glass of champagne to start things off?

That's almost my inevitable practice.
