It's depression mode. I'm John Moe. I'm glad you're here. Talk therapy, when you think about it,

sounds like a pretty tall order. I mean, it works. The therapists are trained and licensed. People get a lot out of it. But the

proposition itself really sounds like a leap. You're supposed to go sit in a room or at your

computer with a person you've never met. Tell them your deepest secrets and fears and traumas,

and then they're supposed to get it. They're supposed to understand. It makes more

sense if you're pretty sure the therapist understands your experiences in life, if they've

been through a lot of the things you've been through. For me, personally, that's pretty easy.

I'm a straight white guy who grew up in the suburbs and went to

college. There are a lot of straight white college-educated therapists out there. It's different for

someone like Jared Hill. Jared is a writer and journalist. He's the co-creator and co-host of the

podcast Fantai here on the Maximum Fun Network.

Fan Thai is a show about the downside of things one might be a fan of.

Like you might love gospel music, but then there's the kind of homophobic bent around that culture, for instance.

Or you might really love awards shows,

but then you have to notice all the really troubling issues around them.

Jarrett is black and queer,

and he has gone to therapy many times over the years,

but there just aren't many therapists out there

who have been through what he's been through.
