And my guest today, the day before the 95th Oscar ceremony takes place in Hollywood and airs on ABC,

is the first term president of the Academy of Motion Picture

Arts and Sciences. She's only the 36th president in the 95-year history of that organization,

following in the footsteps of luminaries like Douglas Fairbanks, Frank Capra, Betty Davis,

George Stevens, Gregory Peck, Robert Wise, and Carl Malden, and she's just the fourth female, second person of color, and first person of Asian descent to occupy that powerful position.

Over the course of our conversation at the Lowe's Hollywood Hotel, where Yang was staying this week in order to oversee preparations for the Oscars at the adjacent Dolby Theater, the 66-year-old and I discussed the evolution of her relationship with China, where her parents were born, but to which she had never visited and felt little connection prior to a trip at the age of 16 in 1972, shortly after President Nixon

traveled there, how she came to be involved in the film industry generally and to specifically

become the premier figure connecting the Chinese and American film industries before transitioning

into producing films such as 1993's The Joy Luck Club,

1996 as the People versus Larry Flint, and 2020s over the moon.

How racist jokes about Asians during the 2016 Oscar's ceremony inspired her to become more active in the academy,

ultimately leading to her appointment to the Board of Governors in, ultimately leading to her appointment to the

Board of Governors in 2019 and to her election to the board's top officer position in

2022.
