Summary

Whilst drinks and decor are vital to creating a great pub, one thing that every pub needs is good conversation. Yes, we’ve all longed to have a silent drink on our own from time to time; but the best pub experiences are those where conversation flows from person to person. And this week’s guest is one of the great conversationalists of our time, and someone that will definitely have an alehouse story or two up her sleeve. It’s broadcasting legend Jane Garvey!

Jane has the distinction of being the first ever voice to be heard on BBC Radio 5 Live (a station somewhat familiar to Landlord John), and brings with her to The Moon Under Water a voice that has been heard by millions over the years. But what sort of pub will Jane create? Will there be a carpeted or wooden floor? Will dogs be allowed inside? And how will she fare with this week’s pub quiz?

Tickets for The Moon Under Water Live are on sale now! Throughout August and September we'll be inviting special guests to create their dream pub LIVE from a real pub (The George IV in Chiswick). Head over to moonunderpod.com for more info and to grab your tickets. The mystical realm awaits!

Oh, meet me in the towering halls of the mind. Take my hand and guide me toward the aquamarine past.

0:18.0

Sit me down and hush the world outside as the ghosts float past the moon underwater. Oh, it's good to be here.

0:58.2

It's good to be here under beam, may I say, under beam.

1:03.3

And what might you call it, Thatch and Wattel, perhaps, who knows, clay plaster and ancient, sort of quite intricate paintings of the walls.

1:19.3

Certain amounts of gilded items this evening, quite a lot of gold gilt work on the walls this evening. There are some lovely

1:29.1

horse brasses. Yeah, I have the feeling that the moon underwater is in a slightly medieval mood.

1:35.1

It's a bit like being in one of those illuminated manuscripts. Oh yes. Yeah, I love those. And also,

1:41.8

as with those manuscripts, there isn't any perspective. No.

1:45.0

So, although you're quite far away from me, you actually look very close.

1:49.0

Yes.

1:50.0

But a bit smaller.

1:51.0

And I'm also the same size as the house and the sun.

1:54.0

Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It's lovely. It's a lovely effect.

1:57.0

And like any illuminated manuscript, the moon underwater this evening is being handled by those little white gloves that museum curators have.

2:04.6

So Robin and I both got on our little white gloves, because we don't want to get any of our sort of oils on the Moon underwater, lest they cause it to tarnish, or dare I say, cause any foxing.

2:17.1

Yes, so we wouldn't be careful of the vellum.

2:19.2

There's lots of vellum about tonight. And the fly sheets.

2:23.9

We're just about expecting Nina Ramirez to turn up to kind of take us through some of the

2:29.3

artefacts. Who's that? She's the medieval historian who is on TV and went to St. Anne's College.

2:35.9

Oh, well, then she is a blessed brethren.

2:39.2

Yeah, she let me copy her medieval translations in first year.

2:43.9

Oh, it's quite good.
