Welcome to The Treatment. I'm Elvis Mitchell. My guest, late, this is a star of the late

late show with James Corden. I guess it was probably five years ago.

It was announced by the time the show airs.

But of course, I know him from one man, two governors.

He's played real-life musicians in One Chance and Tellstar, really underseen film.

And this year is the recipient of seven Emmy nominations in addition to his Tony.

So, James, I'd love to talk to you, but we're out of time because your introduction is so long.

But one of the things I wanted to talk to you about, one of the things I thought the show really broke with, and so continues to do that, is rather than deal with somebody else's discomfort, you sort of bring your own kind of anxiety into it.

I mean, there's a kind of a performance anxiety, and be it like the riff off with Smokey

Robinson you did a couple days ago or any of the kind of musical throwdowns you do, or remember

the very first carpool karaoke with Mariah Carey, or even that first week, which I thought something really

interesting, you walked around basically the Fairfest district and went to somebody's house

and did the show live from the house.

Yeah.

But there's a thing, and I wonder how consciousness is, your way of sort of saying with the audience,

there's not that big a gap between us and letting them sort of feel that anxiety rather than making the audience

anxious, which is so much a part of late night comedy. It's interesting that you think that or see

that. I have a theory, which I can share with you now if you want, about performers, actors, musicians,

whoever it is. And I think there are only two types of performer in the world.

I think there are aliens and there's humans.

And so if you take it to like, and neither are better, by the way.
