Summary

EPISODE 45 - JAKE GYLLENHAAL - Actor

Team Deakins had the opportunity to sit and talk with long time friend, actor Jake Gyllenhaal (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, PRISONERS, NIGHTCRAWLER). Jake speaks about his relationship with directors and with cinematographers. We speak about his work in Donnie Darko and Prisoners, as well as Jarhead and Wildlife. He speaks about how, as an actor, the final result is always in other people’s hands. He also shares how important the collaboration between actor and cinematographer is and the importance of creating a “safe place” for the actor in front of the camera. Although we were hoping he would explain the end of the movie Enemy (and he said he would!), we finished the episode without knowing any more! And we also got into the craft of building sand castles! A really fun conversation that gave us an insight into the world of an actor! Don’t miss it!

RECOMMENDED EPISODE VIEWING: Donnie Darko, Jarhead

Jake, thank you for doing this. Thank you guys, thanks for having me. We're going to start with our first question, which is always, how did you get to where you are now? Did you always want to do this? Did you know from a young age or have you ever wanted to do something different?

I feel like Alice just falling down the hole right now. I don't know where I am now, but if I were to look around and see where I am, I would say a whole lot of luck and I think beginning in a way that was very advantageous and that I was cast in a role at a young age in a really wonderful first movie.

And that sort of set the tone for a lot of things for me.

2:20.4

I think sort of how you how you begin sometimes does very much. And from there, like an

act any actor would tell you you know you're usually chosen for the first role that you do by people who know a lot better than you.

2:37.6

And then it gets harder as it goes on because if you're lucky enough you get to start you making your own choices and that's where you really start to mess up.

2:46.8

Some people really start to make the right choices. But I think for me it started from a wonderful group of people casting me in this movie
