Summary

Veteran journalist Marc Cooper joins Suzi to talk about the landslide that wasn’t, Trump’s transition swamp, and the state of the Fourth Estate. Trump’s victory is confined to the undemocratic electoral college. His winning margin in the popular vote is 1.6 percentage points, the smallest in more than 20 years. Trump may claim an historic, unprecedented mandate, but he just squeaked by. He is still dangerous but vulnerable. We talk about the danger and the chaos to come, including the threat to formal democracy.

Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.

We'll have more on that in a minute. Trump's so-called landslide has now morphed into a much smaller win, except in the Electoral College. The LA Times

1:51.4

calls it the landslide that wasn't. His margin of victory on the popular vote will be probably

1:56.9

around 1.6 percentage points when all votes are counted. And it's the fifth

2:01.9

smallest of the 32 presidential races held since 1900. Some pundits have said more people in

2:09.3

2024 voted for a candidate not named Trump than did. And yet, Trump's trifecta in our

2:15.7

system is a big win. While Biden is still president, all the airtime, indeed, all of the political air is being sucked up by Trump coverage.

2:24.6

So if you forgot what that was like from 2016 to 2020, you're getting a daily reminder.

2:31.5

And for now, all of the attention is on the cabinet picks,

2:35.6

a slew of loyalist opportunists corrupt to the core. One strains to remember the de rigour,

2:43.1

so-called presidential behavior or decorum of the pre-Trump era. And yet the worst of the picks,

Matt Gates, appears to be a step too far,
