My guest today studies the science of explosives.

She started by working on how to make fireworks safer,

and has been involved in research with bees to see

whether they can be used to smell different types of explosives. A current project

involves testing the rocket fuel that's to be used in Bloodhound, the British designed and built

and built supersonic car that aims to reach a speed of a thousand miles an hour.

Jackie Ackervan is professor of explosive chemistry at

Cranfield University where she specializes in polymers.

But a large part of her work is in Homeland Security and Defence,

finding out how to best detect explosives in airports and elsewhere,

teaching security professionals how to differentiate between false alarms

and the real thing.

She also works on explosives used in warfare.

One of her main clients is the Ministry of Defence,

where she works on some top secret contracts.
