Summary

Jack Marucci is the Brain of LSU Football.

He'll push back on that, because he's humble and brilliant. But Marucci, who just finished his 24th season as LSU's Director of Athletics training, is the driving force behind so many innovations and ideas inside of the football program.

He has the trust of Ed Orgeron, who leans on him for research, analysis, technological advancement, player health, character evaluation, and much more. He also has the trust of Orgeron's players, who spend hours in his training room rehabbing, venting, relaxing, seeking counsel, and debating whatever topics of the day should arise in the Barbershop.

On today's show, we look back at the 2019 season through the eyes of Marucci, who was there every step of the way, as well as looking ahead to the future of Tiger football. Throughout the conversation, the same topics converge: character and trust, the blending of objective data with subjective analysis, the balancing of hard work and efficient work, and more.

  • 6:30 - Jack Marucci
  • 8:20 - How character affects recovery
  • 10:38 - Marucci's character study and how it helped predict the 2019 national title
  • 14:20 - SportSense testing and how LSU learned how its players process information
  • 18:00 - Why guys bust in the NFL
  • 19:24 - Why an above average arm is better than an elite rocket of an arm at quarterback
  • 20:45 - Defensive line reaction timing
  • 21:55- Picking which areas of the team to study in the offseason
  • 24:34 - Ed Orgeron, college football's foremost innovator
  • 26:57 - How Coach O built a culture of excellence from top to bottom
  • 31:17 - How the 2019 exuded character in all areas
  • 34:41 - How EA Sports is helping LSU's QBs work in virtual reality
  • 35:38 - The one question every MLB team asks Marucci about LSU
  • 37:25 - Balancing objective data with subjective interpretation
  • 38:38 - Why the human element matters most
  • 41:50 - Sustainability

Hey, Fighting Tigers, Fight all the way.

0:15.6

Hey, fight and time to season two of Hey Fighten Podcast, the official podcast of LSU football. I am Cody Wersham, Digital Meat Reporter, as always. Back for a second season. How about that? We made it through season one. Turned out pretty well. Ratings were good. Oh yeah, the football team did win a national championship too. And so we decided to bring it back for season two. Glad you could be here. Thank you all for

0:39.2

listening. Let's start there. Thank you all for listening all through season one. I know it was easy,

0:44.1

right? LSU went 15 and 0. There was a lot to talk about. There were a lot of good vibes. It was very

0:48.4

easy to pump sunshine because everything was sunshine and lollipops and rainbows and all that stuff.

0:54.8

But honestly, all of you were fantastic to me throughout the season for listening,

0:59.9

for rating, for reviewing.

1:02.3

It was just a really fun thing to kick off and get off the ground.

1:05.8

So I can't thank you enough from the bottom of my heart.

1:08.3

And I'm really excited to be embarking on the 2020 season as

1:12.1

well. We're going to change some things. We're going to do some things differently. We're

1:15.2

going to bring back some of the same things. We're going to try some different stuff. But we have

1:19.8

plenty of time to do that in the off season. It is after all March. It's March 2nd. And I was

1:27.1

shocked. I'll be perfectly. And I was shocked.

1:27.6

I'll be perfectly honest. I was shocked. I got into the office today. I was planning to do this episode with LSU director of athletics training, Jack Marucci. We're going to get to that interview in a second. It's a fascinating interview. I'll preview it in just a second. But I was going to put out an episode this week, and I came into the office, looked at the calendar, and lo and behold, spring football starts on Saturday, and Coach O has a press conference on

1:49.3

Wednesday to preview the spring. And I just can't believe how quickly the offseason has turned

1:54.9

into spring football already. It always spins by fast. A lot has happened since we last spoke.

2:01.5

LSU hired a new passing game coordinator and Scott Lenehan hired a new defensive coordinator, who was also the old

2:06.3

defensive coordinator and Bo Polini. And so much more has happened. Players have gone on to the

2:12.0

NFL draft combine, done very well. Unfortunately, Joe Burrow has small hands, so he's going to

2:17.4

fail in the NFL or something like that. Regardless, Joe Burrow has small hands, so he's going to fail in the NFL or something

2:19.5

like that. Regardless, we will talk about all of that kind of stuff for the next few months.
