I'm the host Scott Feinberg and my guest today is a brilliant songwriter with a social

conscience second to none who has become the guy documentary filmmakers turn to when they need

great music for their work. Only six songs from documentaries ever have been

nominated for the best original song Oscar and only one person was a creator of more than one of them. My guest

Jay Ralph who was nominated for the tunes Before My Time from 2013's

Chasing Ice and Mantore from 2015's racing extinction both pertaining to the

effects of climate change. The 41-year-old whose real first name is Josh

wasn't always associated with Docs. In fact he first

specialized in hip-hop beats which got him signed at just 22 to one of the

biggest deals that Atlantic Records ever had granted to a new artist.

Over the time since, he has crafted music for countless commercials, through his music production company

The Rumor Mill, which has helped to enable him to devote the rest of his time to music about which he feels even more passionate,

and that has the potential to make a difference. Other great docks to which he's contributed,

music include 2009's Man on wire and 2010's The Cove, both of which

went on to win the best documentary feature Oscar, as well as 2012's Helen Back

again and 2015's Verunga, both of which were nominated for it.
