Well, last week at their annual meeting, the Southern Baptist Convention voted to formally oppose the use of in vitro

fertilization. Media outlets quickly reported that the move indicated how abortion opponents

are now expanding efforts into more areas of women's reproductive health.

In reality, however, this resolution just better align Southern Baptist with a core conviction

that, and I quote, the dignity and value of every human being necessarily includes frozen

embryonic human beings, in quote.

Well the delegates called messengers who oppose the resolution told their own personal stories from the

convention floor.

For example, an Ohio husband whose first two children were conceived by IBS disagreed saying,

and I quote, I have 10 embryos I love, I am for the sanctity of life and for the sanctity

of embryos.

I'm against the idea that this technology is so wicked that it cannot be employed."

You see in this view, which was also echoed last week by a group of

Republican lawmakers who defended the procedure, IVF is deeply pro-life because it brings children

into the world, and it's miraculous because it offers people who otherwise could not

have a chance to conceive a child and it's certainly true as the SBC resolution

rightly acknowledges that infertility brings searing pain to those who want children but cannot conceive.

However, the resolution also rightly recognizes that this very real pain of infertility

does not in and of itself justify any means by which a child can be produced,
