She's a compost nerd and sustainability educator, and she's on a mission to help others step-up their household waste management. From her home on the south coast of New South Wales, the teacher and mum of three busy dirt-babies spreads the word on 'garden gold' via Instagram, TikTok, and workshops for councils, community gardens and businesses. We think a lot about waste as people, but also as gardeners and also in our

0:08.4

kitchens as cooks or chefs. In fact, one of the biggest companies here in

0:12.3

America is just called waste management. WM, they drive around everywhere

0:15.9

picking up so-called trash. Today we have Kate Flood, the compost coach back on

0:21.1

the show. What's your perspective on the word waste, Kate?

0:25.4

Oh, I feel like the word waste isn't dirty words because really I want to say

0:29.8

waste in inverted commas. Because as a gardener, you start to realise that

0:34.6

these things that you might put out on the side of the road or, you know,

0:39.0

throw out the council. Actually, it's not waste. It's such a precious resource.

0:44.6

And I really like the idea of instead of going out to a landscaping shop,

0:50.6

you look around your garden, you look around your kitchen, and you shop

0:54.6

these two parts of your home life for resources. Instead of bringing in organic

1:00.4

matter from somewhere else that's being grown and flown to your back yard,

1:04.8

you can get it from your own back yard. You know, it's really exciting to give

1:08.9

out like that. Why don't we start then with inside the home. It's probably a

1:13.3

little more accessible for people if you don't have a thriving garden. Of course,

1:16.2

you have a kitchen and you're using things in that kitchen. Most people have a

1:20.3

list of stuff that you just shouldn't compost. How true would you say is the

1:25.4

common list? Look, I am a bit of a no rules composter

1:29.8

cabinet because I want to return as many nutrient-rich resources to my soil.

1:37.4

And there's lots of different ways of composting. So, you know, people sort of

1:41.4

traditionally think you're slinging stuff into your back yard compost pile.
