Summary

This week friend of the pod Alice Wong (@SFDirewolf) joins Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) to talk about what it means to be a part of the disabled community during a pandemic. Spoiler: the world seems to get a little too cavalier about whether or not you deserve to live anymore. They talk about the grassroots activism being done within the community, and what able bodied folks can do to listen and be better. Remember, we are staying inside and quarantining for the good of everyone, not just those we deem worthy of surviving capitalism. Learn more about Alice’s work with the Disability Visibility Project here. Read more about the fight for Medicaid here. Thanks to our sponsors! Hi, I'm Anna Marie Cox and welcome to With Friends Like These, the show where we talk about

0:09.9

the differences between us without letting them divide us.

0:14.7

I have a very special show this week, special for a few reasons.

0:19.9

One, it is the last show before we go on a quick hiatus, quick, it's relative, it'll

0:25.4

be four weeks.

0:27.6

And it's special because I'm talking to my friend Alice Wong.

0:31.1

She's a disabled rights activist, she's based in San Francisco, she's the editor of an

0:36.0

upcoming anthology by Vintage Books, it'll be available in June, it's called Disability,

0:42.0

Visibility, First Person Stories from the 21st Century, and she's going to offer a first

0:47.4

person story.

0:50.2

The disability rights community, the disability community, the disabled community, however

0:54.7

you want to say it, is mostly invisible to able-bodied people.

1:01.5

Invisible in such a deep way that when I told folks over at Crookhead that I'd be talking

1:08.0

to a disabled rights activist about the stimulus bill, I got responses like, oh, oh, right,

1:16.6

yes.

1:19.4

When you think about it, those people have a big investment and the kinds of changes

1:26.7

we're talking about making to our economy and our healthcare system.

1:30.7

And Alice is so up to date about all of that, she's going to talk about it, and I want

1:37.3

to give a little bit of a content warning.

1:39.9

It's a short conversation, but it is fairly intense.

1:43.4

If you don't want to think about these things, come back when you're ready.

1:50.0

I think it'll be worth it.
