relinquishing control doesn't come naturally to us. Plus other things often stand in our

way. Sinful things like presumption, panic. plus other things often stand in our way,

I want you to turn again to this section of scripture and I want to make three general observations

about it. First of all, first thing I observe here is that the writer is using an Old

Testament story to teach us a New Testament truth.

I'll say that again. This writer, whoever he was, no one knows who wrote

Hebrews, whoever he was, he's using an Old Testament story to teach us a new testament truth. What's the old

testament story? The setting of chapter 4 goes up into chapter 3. In fact, it's an unfortunate chapter break. But if you go back

up to chapter 3, verse 12, you'll pick up a thought from the Old Testament picture or story.

Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you

an evil unbelieving heart in falling away from the living God.

Encourage one another day after day as long as it is

still called today. Lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of

sin. Those are strong words. These are believers, believing Hebrews. He doesn't want them to be
