Summary

Over the past several days the Israeli military has continued a devastating bombardment of the Gaza Strip, with airstrikes flattening entire neighborhoods. Forces also cut off supplies to the area as troops gathered for a likely ground invasion.

This is, of course, in retaliation for the attack by Hamas fighters in Israeli territory on Saturday that left 1300 dead and filled social media with images of intense brutality against civilians.

“I think we’re still in this period of grief,” says Daniel Kurtzer, former U.S. Ambassador to both Israel and Egypt. Kurtzer currently teaches Middle East policy at Princeton University and joined Diane to help give context to the tragic events unfolding in the Middle East.

1:21.4

about this horrific attack on Israel by Hamas is why? How did the Israelis not know it was coming?

1:35.0

What's your response to that? I think there's several factors Diane that account for what has

1:41.5

clearly been a huge intelligence operational and political failure. On the intelligence side,

1:49.7

I think Israel got caught up in what might be called a mistaken conception. The idea that

1:58.0

Hamas would be a better partner than the PLO in that Hamas was not looking for a political outcome.

2:07.8

They seemed to be mostly interested in governing in Gaza,

2:12.4

in increasing their support in the West Bank. You saw over the last few years Israeli leaders

2:20.3

believed that they could arrange with Hamas what's called a Houdna, a long-term ceasefire.

2:29.2

That was a misconception that took hold. Hamas played out its own deception very effectively,

2:37.4

playing into the Israeli misconception. You had this perfect storm of circumstances that led

2:45.6

to the operational failure where the Israeli army just wasn't prepared. We haven't seen

2:52.7

the full reports of what happened, but clearly there were not enough army units in the area of Gaza.

3:02.8

The response time to what happened was amazing, eight in 10 and 12 hours, just to try to rescue
