All right, with that, let's get into the drug of the day today, and that is isotrentinone.

This medication is used for acne, It goes by the brand names of acutane and claryvus are the two most commonly used brand names I've seen. Acutane probably being the most common there. It is taken orally and obviously it has systemic absorption. It can be used

for acne I mentioned. It also can be used for certain types of skin cancers as well. I'm not

going to focus on that tremendous amount here because I've seen it mainly used for acne there.

Mechanistically, how does this drug work?

It actually reduces the sebaceous glands volume or size and ultimately reduces sebum production,

which if you remember, that is an important component in issues

with pimple formation and obviously acne development there.

Administration of this medication, most of the dosage forms are to be given, at least the standard dosage forms are to be given with food.

That does help absorption a little bit.

Also recommended can cause some mild esophagitis once in a while.

So it is recommended to give that with a full glass of water.

There are a couple dosage forms where it says it doesn't depend, you know, it doesn't matter whether you give it with food or not with food.

But most of the standard dosage forms are going to be with food, or at least you can get by with all of them with giving with food if you want to there.
