So, Burdo, what is gas lighting? What is the definition of gas lighting according to Amberto Castagnetta?

0:08.4

It is basically where you are using deceptive tactics to try to convince someone of something

0:16.0

that's factually not true, and yet by doing so, you do it so much and you keep in character, so to speak,

0:23.9

that the other person actually starts, like, second-guessing their own reality.

0:28.8

Yeah, that's a good definition. So, we get a lot of emails about this, a lot of questions,

0:34.0

and a lot of people are using the word on the internet these days. So, I asked people to submit

0:41.2

their stories of gas lighting. We received a lot of submissions, and I thought we would read

0:48.3

a sampling of those and find out how people are using the term. So, in this episode, I want to

0:56.0

define the term and also want to discuss related topics, related concepts, concepts that perhaps

1:03.6

might be more apt when people are describing situations where they might use the word gas lighting.

1:09.8

There might be a more accurate, precise word to describe what they're going through.

1:15.6

Maybe gas lighting is also changing over time. I don't know, but the main thing that I want to do

1:21.6

in today's episode is try to learn how people are using it and also validate people's experience,

1:28.4

because if you're ever using the term gas lighting as in that person gas lit me, in all likelihood,

1:36.4

that person harmed you, and it felt bad, and it was perhaps even immoral, but was done to you.

1:44.4

And so, you deserve validation, regardless of what word one uses to describe it.

1:51.6

Also, major trigger warning. We are going to be talking about gas lighting and anything related to it,

1:58.0

so make sure that you take care of yourself and maybe not listen if you might be triggered.

2:03.6

This is the Psychology in Seattle Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Kirk Honda. I'm a licensed

2:07.6

therapist, and I'm also a professor. Who are you, bro?

2:10.0

My name is Umberto Kassagné, and I'm an unlicensed computer keyboard operator.

2:14.8

So, the origin, as you mentioned, comes from a movie, but it actually goes back to a play,
