Summary

What if the resurrection isn't just a matter of faith—but of history? In this special Holy Week episode, Esau McCaulley sits down with New Testament scholar Craig Keener to explore the historical evidence for Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, Rome's brutal use of the cross, and why the earliest witnesses to the empty tomb were women. They also reflect on the personal and political meaning of the cross, and how the resurrection reshapes our understanding of suffering, hope, and what it means to be human.

Welcome to the Esau McCauley podcast I'm your host Issaa McCau McCauley. I'm joined by our producer, Mike Strelow. Say hello to everyone, Michael. Hi, everyone. It's great to be here. Do I ever call you Michael? Does anyone call you Michael? Is that just me? It's no, it's just you. It's just Mike. But, you know, I'll run with for you, Esau. You can call me anything. We have Mike. And we're also joined by my good friend, Professor Craig Keener.

You're the Professor of New Testament at Asbury. Is that correct? Yes, I'm one of several. One of several. And so this is Holy Week, and this will come out on Monday, Thursday. It will. On the verge of Good Friday and the celebration of Easter. We thought it would be really interesting to say a little bit about, talk a little bit today about the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus with a real live New Testament scholar since I don't really count. I don't know why, even though it's my podcast. I don't count it as a New Testament scholar. I got to bring on a separate New Testament scholar to say stuff that I might also know. But if Greg says it...

get involved in New Testament scholarship. Was this something that you always wanted to do? Did you always

want to be a Bible scholar? Or is that something that came to you later in life? Actually, when I was younger, biblical studies was one thing I scrupulously

avoided. I loved studying the ancient world, but I was avoiding that because I was an atheist,

and I just didn't like those kind of things. I thought they were silly until I met Jesus

and he converted me from being an atheist. And so once I met Jesus, I realized that the most

And so I started cramming the study of the Bible.
