So there's a basket of yarn and a crochet hook in the corner.

Could you use them to crochet the secrets of the universe?

Imagine that you'd never seen a sphere.

You couldn't really imagine it, but it could be described with theories.

And then one day somebody comes along and says,

oh, you know what?

Here's a model of a sphere.

It's a beach ball.

And suddenly you can see it in front of your eyes

and you can draw lines on it

and demonstrate properties of it.

This is what Dr Tamina did

with the hyperbolic plane.

Dr. Tamina is a Latvian mathematician who grew up in Latvia knitting and crocheting

and also studying mathematics and computer science. And when she moved to the US, she heard

about this hyperbolic structure

and the fact that a lot of mathematicians didn't see how you could make a model of it.

She thought about it and she realized she could do it with knitting and crochet.

Really, the pattern or the formula for doing this, the algorithm really, is very simple.
