Summary

Romans 7:7-12 - What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

0:38.9

important question for us today regarding the use of the Old Testament law. You see it's quite easy as

0:46.4

believers in Jesus Christ in this New Testament era to feel like the Old Testament

0:51.6

law is pretty irrelevant for us because you know we read some parts of it and you hear all about sacrifices and washings and various religious sorts of things that seem to have no place in our current Christian culture.

1:05.1

So what do we do with all that?

1:07.0

Well Paul answers that question for us, let's read it in Romans Chapter 7,

1:11.2

verse number 7. What shall we say then? That the law is

1:15.4

sin? Now let's stop for a moment. Why is he saying that someone might conclude

1:20.6

that the law is sin? Well it's because he has made the point

1:24.0

previously that the Old Testament law is not able to give us any power to obey it.

1:32.0

It just points out our sin. to give us any power to obey it.

1:32.5

It just points out our sin.

1:34.8

And in so doing, provokes us to sin even more.

1:38.2

He's going to talk about that more here in just a moment.

1:41.6

And so it could be an erroneous kind of a conclusion someone comes to.

1:44.7

Well then the law is bad.
