ever attended science class at a public high school or college has been taught the theory of an ancient earth.

Many scientists say geological findings prove that the earth is, the numbers vary from source to source, but approximately four and a half billion years old.

We also know, of course, that many people in the scientific community are very hostile to the biblical account of creation.

And they argue that the Bible teaches what is sometimes referred to as young earth creationism or the idea that the earth is only about 6,000 years old.

But what does the Bible really say about the age of the earth?

Does it even really matter?

And how should Christians respond to these arguments?

Let me say, first of all, all the discussion of the ancient earth doesn't bother me at all.

It doesn't disturb my faith at all.

And the reason is the book of Genesis was not written as a scientific textbook.

It was written to teach theological truths.

And everything the Bible says is true. But the Bible, you have to take what the Bible is

intending to teach. And the Bible is teaching within a culture. So if the Bible taught advanced science

and explain terms in technical ways,

the people to whom it was given for thousands of years couldn't have understood it. And even today,

we might pride ourselves understanding it. But what if the Lord doesn't come for another 200 years?

A lot of things we think are true are going to be ridiculously false or naive.
