Summary
The Book of Clarence is a movie with Jesus that isn’t really about Jesus. As such, it takes a good deal of creative license with the biblical story. But does that make it blasphemy? And does a story have to be about Jesus to help us know him better? Let’s take a look at what the film teaches about Jesus—and us.

| 0:00.0 | Greetings and welcome to the Daily Article podcast. Today is Friday, January the 12th, |
| 0:07.9 | 2020. I'm Chris Elkins of the Denison Forum, narrating today's article written by Dr. Ryan Denison. |
| 0:15.9 | The Book of Clarence, a new film from writer-director James Samuel, takes place in Jerusalem across |
| 0:22.9 | the weeks leading up to Christ's crucifixion. However, it's not really a story about Jesus. |
| 0:29.3 | As Samuel described, if they tell you a Bible story, you wouldn't get the story of the guy |
| 0:35.5 | around the corner, or the person who sold Jesus his sandals. |
| 0:39.6 | And that's where the movie's main character, Clarence, played by Lakeith Stanfield, steps in. |
| 0:46.2 | You see, Clarence is the fictionalized twin brother of the apostle Thomas, a detail based in |
| 0:52.3 | scripture. Thomas was called the twin three times in John's Gospel, |
| 0:56.4 | but the film takes a great deal of license from there. Consequently, Clarence is well acquainted |
| 1:01.7 | with the work of Jesus. Yet Clarence is also, as Alyssa Wilkinson described, an atheist stoner |
| 1:08.2 | who sells first century weed. As such, when he looks at Christ's ministry, he sees a false Messiah getting paid by a duped populace, |
| 1:17.1 | and he thinks he can do the same. |
| 1:19.0 | After all, in his view, Jesus is a con man as well. |
| 1:23.2 | Clarence's ruse works for a time. |
| 1:26.2 | However, he eventually learns the hard way that the Romans don't take kindly to would-be messiahs and his story turns from there. |
| 1:35.0 | Ultimately, the Book of Clarence is a solid film that tells an interesting story while pulling from the biblical account without feeling beholden to it. |
| 1:44.2 | There was certainly times when those creative liberties stand out more than others. |
| 1:48.9 | But when it comes to his portrayal of the true Messiah, |
| 1:52.2 | Samuel does not cross the line into blasphemy, |
| 1:54.8 | staying pretty faithful to the Jesus of Scripture. |
| 1:57.8 | If you can get past those differences and accept the film for the story it's trying to tell, |
