Summary

On this Monday Buckeye Talk Podcast, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means are back to talk about the Ohio State quarterbacks. Included in this episode: What Ryan Day said about the QBs on Monday. How OSU compares to Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Texas A&M in terms of their 2021 QB plans. Those were the top five teams in the final AP poll last year, and they all lost their starting QBs. How many other second-year quarterbacks from the Class of 2020 are in line to start this season, like Ohio State's C.J. Stroud might be? In the playoff era, how many teams have won it all with a first-year QB, like Ohio State will try to do this season? Would you rather have these three Ohio State QB candidates or J.T. Barrett to play a season? Results from our QB texter survey. It's more interesting QB talk as the Buckeyes work through spring practice. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Hey, hey, where you been, but got talk is about to begin, hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:25.8

Welcome back to the Tuesday book I talk from cluelon.com to glimmeries.

0:29.4

Even means Nathan Baird I was just telling the guys I felt like my microphone was a little weird on the last podcast on the weekend pod so if you thought that I apologize for that I hope it's a little better now we're talking quarterbacks we did this on the big Wednesday rapid fire last week.

0:43.4

Great first question like would you rather have the these three young Ohio State quarterbacks would you rather have one of the big 10 veterans.

0:49.4

And we went like 20 minutes on it but I just want to go an hour on I just want to talk only about quarterbacks we did speak with Ryan Day on Monday.

0:56.4

Got some little a little more quarterback intel how things are progressing.

1:01.4

But I want to put Ohio State's quarterback competition in the context of other quarterback competitions in college football right now that are going on at other schools.

1:14.4

And what other winning teams have done recently with young quarterbacks who don't have much experience.

1:22.4

I do think it's possible and a lot of the times what I talk about here is just what's in my own head.

1:28.4

And maybe I'm not reflective of the listening base or the fan base for Ohio State Nathan.

1:34.4

But I feel like I've been treating this quarterback competition so far as like man they got a young quarterback nobody's ever played I don't know what are they going to do.

1:47.4

And I think actually I have to realize this is normal.

1:52.4

This is like what happens when you have a great quarterback and he moves on and then this happens at great programs and it is happening a great programs right now.

2:00.4

And so the thing I'm trying to wrap my head around Nathan.

2:04.4

Is this entirely just normal and this is where it goes and the only reason it feels weird is because the truncated season last year prevented.

2:13.4

Stroud and Miller from getting any reps and if they had got normal backup quarterback reps then there'd be this would just be completely 100% this is how it works.

2:23.4

Or is there something still a little unusual of like there's no real veteran it's all three young guys who are within one class of each other.

2:33.4

I'm having a little bit of a hard time with it because the research that word that I did that we're going to get into is making me think like what am I freaking out about I'm like it's like oh they're going to have a good enough quarterback for Oregon it's like.

2:43.4

I think there's like seven other major programs in the country asking similar questions of that like that for the 2021 season so like what's your vibe on.

2:52.4

How unusual or odd this is the shape of this Ohio State QB competition.

2:58.4

The end result is not going to be that strange the end result is going to be a freshman quarterback wins this job either red shirt or true freshman there's nothing that's that.

3:07.4

Crazy about that so the end result is not that strange but I think the process is a little bit unique here again as we talk about many times because it's only freshman it's only guys who've never thrown a pass even though this guy who got into games.
