Summary

This Thursday Buckeye Talk episode is homework that nobody actually wanted. Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means created their own Big Ten fan satisfaction rankings for each of the 14 schools, combining how good the schools are at football and men's basketball and how much fans care about each of the two programs. The formula is this: Each school was broken into two percentages that equal 100 to show how much football matters at that school compared to men's basketball. A school might be an even 50-50, or it might be 90 football and 10 men's basketball, or 75 men's basketball and 25 football. That's a way of showing how much fans care about each of those two sports compared to each other. Then, each of the 28 football and men's basketball teams was ranked on a scale of 1 to 14, with 1 being very unsatisfied and 14 being completely happy. Each of those rankings was then multiplied by the caring percent. And then the two numbers were added together to get that schools satisfaction rating. For instance, a team given an 8 in men's basketball that had a 40 percent care rating for basketball would get 320 points, and then a 6 in football for a 60 percent care rating would create 360 points, and overall, that team's satisfaction number would be 680. See!? It's a math podcast! Doug, Nathan and Stephen talk it out and reveal their 1-14 rankings. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Hey, hey, where you been, but got talk is about to begin, hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:27.0

Welcome back to your Thursday, but got talk.

0:28.6

Doug Lamarie, Steven Means, Nathan Baird is not rapid fire, probably should be because I gave Nathan and Steven homework.

0:34.6

They sent in their homework. I've been tabulating it like a substitute teacher and I'm not sure the results make any sense or tell us anything, but I talk.

0:45.6

But we're doing this anyway. I'm not sure you want this as listeners. I'm not sure Nathan and Steven wanted to participate in this as journalists.

0:53.6

And I'm not quite sure what I was thinking when I came up with this.

0:58.6

These are fan satisfaction rankings for the big tent.

1:03.6

It is a proprietary formula that I'm not going to tell you what it is because I'm not even sure what it is.

1:09.6

But the idea was supposed to be simple and it's not.

1:13.6

It's to combine football and men's basketball and give a rating to all 28 of those programs in the big tent on a scale of one to 14,

1:23.6

because there are 14 teams in the league of how good we think that program is right now.

1:28.6

And that rating for that program is based on the ceiling of that program. So the way it's sort of like if you just asked a fan of that team, hey, how do you feel about your team on scale of one to 14, how to feel about your team.

1:39.6

A nine win season in football at Ohio State is not the same thing as a nine win season at Rutgers.

1:46.6

Right. So that's the thing you have to think about, but also Ohio State has the opportunity to win a national title, which brings you a different kind of joy.

1:54.6

Then it did in the mind of the car car bowl. So you, you want to have context and judge it on a curve, but not only on a curve.

2:00.6

So we have those ratings, right. How good your program is in men's basketball and football.

2:05.6

And then this came from an idea that I had over the summer when I was doing the preview pods for every big tent opponent this year when I had the Indiana and Maryland writers on.

2:15.6

That's where we are right now, by the way, everybody else is interviewing Zach Osterman. He's doing 1400 Ohio State podcasts this week because he's like the only Indiana football writer.

2:24.6

I had him on in July. Go back and listen to that. He's not coming on again now.

2:28.6

But I asked Zach Osterman and I asked the Maryland beat writer. We head on. I said in a pie at 100% in a pie.

2:35.6

How would you break down how much fans of that school care about men's basketball versus football?

2:42.6

And so we then did that for every program, every athletic department in the big 10 out of 100% how much would fans care about basketball men's basketball versus football.
