So this case of Luigi Mangione, it's taken on sort of a life of its own in regards to the support that this young man has from the public.

And the support meaning that many people take this as a as legitimately a cause

celeb that he killed this evil individual,

the CEO of United Healthcare.

A company that according to public records has denied many people

health care claims and many people, many families have alleged

that loved ones have died because of decisions made by United Healthcare and not allowing their

claims to go through and not allowing them to receive the treatment that they needed to stay alive.

So this call for the death penalty by the Attorney General Pam Bondi is news from yesterday,

Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in Luigi Mangione's murder trial.

Mangione is accused of shooting and killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in

broad daylight in New York last December, just a few blocks from where we're sitting.

Mangione has not, as pleaded, not guilty to state charges.

He has not yet been arraigned on any federal charges. An attorney for Mangione called

the Attorney General's direction, quote, barbaric. Anna Schechter is with, is our CBS News,

crime and public safety reporter, and she joins us now. So Manjani's lawyer said this is political.

What do you make of it? Well, it certainly looks political when you

think about the timing. Why is Pam Bondi putting out this press release yesterday? We already knew

that one of those federal charges could carry the death penalty. On January 20th, the White

House put out a statement saying Trump wants to reinstate the death penalty.
