The Berlin airlift started in 1948 when Russia essentially shut off all rail and road transport

into West Berlin. West Berlin was surrounded by East Germany.

And so it was landlocked and there was no way to get food, clothing, you know, normal supplies,

or even coal, which was the main source for winter heat in Germany at that time,

into West Berlin. And the started in June of 58, but you know, it was still going when the winter

came. This happened, by the way, the Russians did this the day after America and France and

Great Britain gave Germany the Deutschmark essentially. We set up their financial system for them.

In anticipation of them becoming an independent nation. So this was, you know, Russia's

way of saying, wait a minute, we don't want Germany to be an independent nation and we think that,

you know, these East and West Germany should continue to be protectors.

But in any case, the way that they wanted to get that done was by starving people and freezing

people. And so Harry Truman organized an airlift into West Berlin, an amazing story from the US
