Summary
Ever since British Vogue asked the rather incendiary question, “is having a boyfriend embarrassing?” the internet has been up in arms. With an astonishing number of people who have “yes” on their lips and a sharpened pitchfork for anyone who thinks otherwise, we thought it would be best to sit down with our dear friend Sara Harvey and take a close look at the article. Is this 800 word piece really the 4B rallying cry the internet seems to think it is, or is it just another agent of the normie gender war that has overtaken contemporary feminist discourse? | 0:21.0 | bad to the publicity. That's what this article is about to me. I'm like, this isn't about real |

| 0:32.9 | it's sort of a parody of the Beatles. Homer enters a barbershop quartet and they become famous and |
| 0:39.8 | he has to tell Marge that he has to pretend that she like she has to sort of like hide her existence |
| 0:45.6 | because he has to remain single and datable. Obviously parodying the fact that that's actually what |
| 0:50.5 | happened to the Beatles real life wives. And I'm like people have been doing this forever. I also just watched singing in the rain. It's like, you know, people have been sort of like hiding their relationships forever. It's always been a branding thing. I don't think it's necessarily gendered. Yeah, I don't, I agree that I don't think it's necessarily gendered. Yeah, it's peddling like a pretty capitalist logic. It has a quote that says outright that boyfriends are out of style. And it just feels like, I don't know, that kind of like render human beings obsolete because they aren't performing to certain standards of what's on trend. Like what'll work for my image? And to me, it just really also ties back to this conversation Hannah and I had in our AI boyfriends episode. In some ways I agree, but it also just feels like this kind of heteropessimist opt-out argument just fuels that whole concept of self-optimization. Having a boyfriend and stuff sort of like blip in the process to making as much money as possible, being your most optimized self for social media. Nowhere in this article, does she talk about like turning to friends or family or kinship? She really barely discusses that. All she talks really about is how it'll strengthen our personal |
