At this very moment, some 50,000 ships are at sea or calling in a port somewhere around the world.

Their work keeps the global economy moving, transporting 90% of all our goods.

But as these vessels crisscross the oceans, they also generate 3% of the world's greenhouse

gas emissions.

That's more than aviation, and the same amount as Germany.

But recently, an agreement was reached at the International Maritime Organisation

to halve emissions by around 2050.

So just how might that be navigated? Well, there are new technologies on the horizon, but will that be enough to help shipping go green?

I'm standing in the harbour right in the heart of Copenhagen, and the reason I'm here is because towering above me is a brand new container ship.

For the last century, most ships have been propelled by polluting marine diesel,

but this is a first of its kind vessel powered by a low carbon fuel called green methanol.

It recently completed its maiden voyage sailing 21,000

kilometres from South Korea to Denmark and arrived here for its inauguration two weeks ago.
