Do you find that fasting interferes with your ability to sleep at night? Quite a few people have told me that their sleep isn’t as good at night while they’re doing intermittent fasting. I recently found some research on why this might be. Take a look.
In this study, the researchers found that energy restriction for 2-7 days caused decreased nocturnal secretion of melatonin by 20%.
What can you do about this? There are two things you can try:
1. You can add MCT oil to your diet. You want to have this just before bed.
2. Increase your carbs to 50g a day.
Try one of these and see how it affects your sleep.
The reason for this problem has to do with insulin resistance. You could have insulin resistance that has been there for a long time. This causes your brain to be starved of glucose. It can take your body time to adapt to ketones so that your energy, especially in the brain, isn’t restricted.

| 0:21.6 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting Podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. So I have a question for you. Are you finding that fasting is interfering with your |
| 0:49.1 | ability to sleep through the night? Now, I've actually spent quite a bit of time to try to find research on this |
| 0:55.4 | point. And all I could find is just a very tiny bit of research in animal studies, okay, |
| 1:01.7 | my studies. However, I do know quite a few people who have told me that their sleep is not as |
| 1:08.7 | good when they're doing fasting. This could be the reason right here. |
| 1:12.5 | So in the study, energy restriction was applied for two to seven days, two to seven days of fasting. |
| 1:19.6 | And what they found is it decreases nocturnal. That means at night secretion of melatonin. |
| 1:25.8 | This is the hormone that helps you sleep by 20%. So if you're finding that |
| 1:31.6 | when you're putting your pet mouse on a fasting program and they're not sleeping, you want to do |
| 1:37.9 | two things. And I'm being very sarcastic. You can actually apply this to yourself as well. |
| 1:43.0 | You want to add MCT oil to your diet |
| 1:46.0 | right before bed. Or you can try this. Increase your carbohydrates to 50 grams. And that should help. |
| 1:56.5 | Maybe add more berries, something like that. And you'll find that you'll do a little bit better. |
| 2:01.7 | And the reason for that is that chances are you have insulin resistance, and it's probably |
| 2:07.8 | been there for a long time. And it's going to take a while for you to adapt. You see, what you have to |
| 2:12.7 | realize is that glucose is one fuel of the brain, and so is ketones. The majority of population has insulin |
| 2:22.2 | resistance, and it's affecting their cognitive function. And we don't know exactly, but it's almost |
| 2:28.8 | as if the blood-brain barrier gets insulin resistance. And what happens is that the cells of the brain don't get |
| 2:37.8 | the glucose. And so when you have an Alzheimer's patient, what's really happening with the neurons |
