Summary

Dr. Flowers responds to a Catholic who has a fundamental misunderstanding of the Biblical concept of meritorious works which leads him to erroneously conclude that Protestants are inconsistent to maintain a doctrine of Faith Alone while holding onto the doctrine of Free Will.

Hello and welcome back to Sochiology 101. I'm often accused of only talking about Calvinism.

0:05.9

And granted, this podcast was started as a result of my dissertation on the rise of Calvinism

0:12.7

within the Southern Baptist Convention and helping people to understand other robust,

0:17.2

deep theological answers to the questions regarding predestination and election,

0:22.6

interpretations of Romans 9, Ephesians 1, John 6, and other passages that are often used by

0:28.0

Calvinist. As a former Calvinist, that was my study, that was my dissertation. That's been my

0:33.8

interest, and it's a hot button topic, especially right now in the SBC. As I've told people

0:38.0

before, I don't talk about the roundness of the earth at home. But if my son shows up and begins

0:45.0

to try to convince his siblings and my wife that the earth is flat, then guess what daddy is going to

0:50.7

have to talk about? He's going to have to talk about the roundness of the earth. In the same way,

0:53.7

I don't necessarily like to talk about free will or all these

0:56.1

different doctrines. But if within my church family, people begin to come and to say that there's

no such thing as a doctrine of free will or that God has determined all things and that we really

1:05.6

don't have a choice that's a real choice, but that it's actually a decreed choice or a choice that's determined

1:13.1

by God and it's not ultimately determined by us, then guess what that he's going to have to talk

1:17.4

about? He's going to have to talk about that doctrine that I don't believe is true. And so the

1:22.8

reason I've talked on Calvinism is because that has been my field of study. However, I have addressed those

1:29.0

from the Armenian tradition that I disagree with with regard to total inability, for example,

1:34.1

or maybe the concept of apostasy or the possibility of losing salvation. There are some

1:40.4

disagreements that I have with other satirological systems that I've engaged with on the blog and here at the podcast.

1:46.6

There's also been a time or two when I've engaged with Catholics who have had a disagreement with me on this view or that, this point or that point.

1:55.4

Now, it obviously is buried underneath a lot of the other perspectives that we have with regard to the Calvinism
