Hello everyone and welcome to this episode of The Disclosure Podcast.

On today's episode, I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr. Jonathan Birch.

Dr. Jonathan Birch is an award-winning philosopher, and he's a professor of philosophy at the London School of Economics.

His work focuses on topics

including animal sentience, welfare and ethics, and he is the director at the Jeremy Collar Centre

for Animal Sentience, which is a new research centre at the London School of Economics. Dr. Jonathan

Birch is an author of dozens of articles and two books, including this year's

award-winning The Edge of Sentience. In 2021, he was the principal investigator on a report

that ultimately led to the UK government formally recognising the cephalopods and decapod crustaceans

are sentient beings, and as a result, they're included in the UK's Animal Welfare

Sentience Act. His work has been cited in policies that are banning octopus farming, and he is a founding

member of the Insect Welfare Research Society, which is a collective of researchers who are

working together to explore the evidence around insect sentience and insect welfare.
