| 0:00.0 | All right, welcome back to another episode of Irish Illustrated Insider, brought to you by Irish Illustrated.com. I'm Pete Samson with Tim Preester and Tim O'Malley. |
| 0:15.7 | We're going to jump into three quick topics today. First, building off one of O'Malley's stories from last week about red zone offense and sort of, you know, is it, was that an Everett Golsome problem or not? |
| 0:27.6 | We're going to talk a little bit about Cori Russell, but more in the big picture topic of the Sports Illustrated story that came out on him and also sort of the demands on the Notre Dame student athlete, more |
| 0:40.0 | specifically the football players, and then also just safety recruiting a little bit at the end. |
| 0:44.8 | But Tim, your story about Red Zone Office was interesting because after reading it, you kind of |
| 0:49.2 | think, well, wait a minute, these turnovers aren't on a specific quarterback. It's more on a specific |
| 0:53.6 | system. |
| 0:56.5 | Yeah, and really the idea came from a positive. |
| 0:59.0 | I thought in the kind of backwards way of thinking, |
| 1:01.0 | boy, if it weren't for botched snaps and turnovers, |
| 1:02.9 | they had a pretty good red zone offense last year, |
| 1:06.7 | and then I realized that's not isolated to 2014. |
| 1:10.0 | It happened in the Reese, Chris year 2011, |
| 1:12.8 | where they had all those turnovers and rougher missing field goals. |
| 1:16.1 | And it's a strange, you don't think of Kelly's teams. |
| 1:24.7 | We've even seen stories of Kelly's running backs don't fumble and how much improved they are from that first year when they were fumblers and now they're not. |
| 1:32.1 | But the quarterbacks and the turnovers over a five-year period. And, you know, Reese did start more games than Golsson and he had more, |
| 1:36.9 | and that's not overly surprising, I guess, if you think back to the Tommy Reese era. It's surprising that it continued through his senior year. Last year, it's pointed out in the story |
| 1:42.2 | that they scored touchdowns on 65% of their drives in the red zone. That's the same as Oregon. It's better than Arizona State. It's better than Wisconsin. And I thought Wisconsin was not... It's about the same as Wisconsin. It's technically better. I find that notable because Wisconsin had Melvin Gordon and you think get in the red zone run the ball. You're fundamentally sound. It's great. it's just the catastrophic mistakes, but it's not isolated. You can't just say, well, they won't make those mistakes now because everyone has made those mistakes for five years. And I mentioned it to Pete when I was kind of writing the story. He said, you know, it's hard to take this in context of Everett Golson. So the point was look back at Brady Quinn and Jimmy Closson, and I realized Brady Quinn is a better quarterback than all the other guys. And he's also sturdier, a stronger guy. But one in three years. One red zone turnover on Brady Quinn in three. In three years. This is ridiculous. And Claussen had, I believe it was eight in his 31 starts or something, but a lot of those are isolated to when he had no |
| 2:34.3 | offensive line and no hope. I mean, this is a direct reflection of an offense that over-emphasizes |
| 2:40.5 | the passing game in the redsard, correct? I mean, or maybe we should say, doesn't emphasize |
| 2:45.3 | the running game enough, and that's something that we've talked about before. I love stories |
