Hi from CNN, I'm Josh and Shana with the five things you need to know for Tuesday,

January 13th.

We begin with the brutal crackdown on protesters in Iran.

As a US-based rights group says more than 500 protesters have been killed, videos that have

made their way past the internet blackout show dozens of bodies in makeshift morks,

as family members desperately try to identify them.

The full scale of the casualties remains unclear.

President Donald Trump has announced he will slap a 25 percent tariff on countries that

do business with Iran, which could theoretically mean a minimum 45 percent tariff rate on goods from China and a 75%

rate on goods from India, though there are questions on what doing business means.

Trump is still weighing a military option to, quote, rescue anti-government protesters,

and Iran has responded by threatening strikes on U.S. military bases, ships and personnel

across the region if the U.S. was to intervene.

Though White House Press Secretary Karadine Levitt says there's a mismatch with the public and

private messages from Tehran.

He's told all of you last night that what you're hearing publicly from the Iranian

regime is quite differently from the messages

the administration is receiving privately.

I think the president has an interest in exploring those messages.
