While Japan by itself may not move the needle for Apple these days,

iPhone by itself caused quite the shift for Japan in the first quarter of this year.

That is the word from counterpoint research.

According to the market tracker, smartphone sales in Japan were up an anomalous 31% in the March quarter versus the same

quarter a year earlier. Counterpoint says 90% of that 31% was thanks to iPhone. No other OEM recorded

shipment growth of more than half a million units during the same period,

according to the firm, underscoring Apple's central role in the current market expansion.
