Disclaimer: This podcast is for informational, educational, and entertainment purposes only, and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Oh, and while we’re here to give you the answers google won’t, self-worth is sold separately, and happiness not included.

Poison punch. It’s toxic. It’s everywhere. And it’s making us all sick. It’s the diets, the weight loss teas and programs, workouts, and superfood powders that say they’re selling health. Or the supplements, creams, prescriptions, makeups, treatments, and procedures that promise to make you look younger and yield you, unconditional love. And it’s all the apps, pop-ups, fads, people, retreats, and goop that cost a fortune but guarantee a better version of you. Poison punch is the 70+ billion dollar industry that profits off you looking in the mirror and thinking, “I’m fat, old, tired, and ugly”.

Poison punch is everything you're being told and sold to fix problems that (spoiler alert!) don’t actually exist.

There’s no way in hell the diet and beauty industries are going anywhere. Poison punch is here to stay. And while we might not be able to rid the world of poison punch, we can change our relationship to it. Join hosts Kelly Roberts and Kayla Reynolds M.S. every week as they figure out what’s poison punch, what punch has traces of poison in it, and what’s actually true.

One of the most common questions we get is: What about Whole30? Is it poison punch?

This week we’re breaking down the Whole30 and demystifying this diet in disguise.

Specifically we’re talking about why the Whole30 is especially tricky, because it’s hard to argue against eating more fruits and vegetables, right?

We deep dive how:

  • Food rules are at the core of the Whole30 and how these rules breed a restrictive mindset
  • Saying it’s not about weight loss is one of the biggest red flags, and the ther promises they make are just as harmful
  • Guilt and shame are the name of the game, and Whole30 is ready to gaslight you if you stray from ‘reset’
  • It’s grounded in pseudoscience (and how Kayla was ghosted when she tried to learn about the ‘science’)
  • It’s negligent to have people follow an extreme elimination and reintroduction protocol without medical support
  • ‘Problem foods’ aren’t a thing, but thinking foods are problematic is
  • Changing your relationship with food is a mental and emotional process requiring work, not simply eliminating a bunch of food

We recognize that behind every single diet, program, product, or anything else there are people — people who are trying to feel good, get answers, find love, and feel happy. People who are targeted, or rather preyed on, by the diet and beauty industries, and people whose lives are forever changed by their experiences. So we’re committed to also telling your stories. Stories that while unique in their details, represent the experience of so many. This week, we also have a special guest, Kiki Mikkelsen @kikiberunning (a member of our community, Badass Lady Gang), who talks about her relationship with Whole30 — the good, the bad, and why on her fourth round she finally decided it was enough.

CW: Kiki’s experience does talk about weight, numbers, and other dieting behaviors. If this feels at all triggering for you, skip ahead to where Kayla and Kelly unpack the Whole30.

Oh, hey gang! Welcome to the Run Selfie Repeat Podcast. It's me, Kelly. We've been doing

0:08.8

a lot of uploading because it's exciting because we've been working hard on a new show.

0:14.8

It's called The Poison Punch Podcast. Last year we launched a really fun eight-week

0:22.4

series called Tis the Season to Digit Diet Culture. And after Kayla and I finished that,

0:27.9

we kind of didn't want to stop. And there was a show that I wanted to launch

0:32.3

last year, along similar lines called Snake Oil, but with everything that was happening,

0:37.6

the timing just didn't seem right. And it's a nice little marriage between that idea

0:44.0

and what Kayla and I have discovered about ditching diet culture and just kind of like taking

0:48.3

your flamethrower and burning down everything that is diet culture and, you know, normal

0:55.6

feminine beauty ideals. So this is the very first episode of The Poison Punch Podcast. I wanted

1:01.7

to also share it here with all of you. Just in case you enjoy it and you want to pop over to

1:08.3

The Poison Punch Podcast and subscribe and join us every week as we examine all different

1:16.3

procedures, diets, fads, trends, workouts, bullshit, all of it to find out what's Poison Punch,

1:24.0

what has traces of Poison Punch in it, and what's actually true. Enjoy!

1:32.5

Welcome to The Poison Punch Podcast, where we are in the business of detoxing from the harmful

1:38.0

messages that are spiking our subconscious. And today, by popular demand, we have...

1:45.0

This is dramatic music, by the way. Whole 30. I don't know what that is, but... Whole 30 is the whole 30

1:58.8

Poison Punch. This is probably one of the questions that Kelly and I get the most, and by the most,

2:06.6

it's every day. I'm like equally... I'm equally excited to talk about this because I... here's

2:12.5

something that we actually cut out of Tis the season to ditch diet culture. I kind of fought Kayla

2:16.8

on this because I listened to an episode of the Nike trained podcast with the woman who co-founded

2:24.4

this, and I, being the typical asshole that I am, was like, listen here, Kayla, with a degree.
