Okay, first recording by Damien in Greenland. I'm just going to try and record some sort of cracks and bubbles and pops from a little iceberg that's alongside and also one of the nearby glaciers is carving which gives the odd thundery sound so if we're lucky we might get some of that too. Earlier this summer, Guardian Environment Editor Damien Carrington got the chance to join a group of scientists on an expedition to the ends of the Earth.

It's a really extraordinary, beautiful kind of savage,

but serene place.

They were venturing into a dangerous world of water and ice.

I could never get closer than about a kilometer because of safety reasons.

So there was always this gap that was frustrating. It's the one area in my science that I was always wanting to know what is that interface

and that interface was until now an unreachable point.

It's where the huge glaciers that spill from Greenland end and the sea

begins.

They are the ragged edge of the front line of the battle between the ocean and the ice.

And the answers it contains could change how we plan for humanity's future.

There's no better feedback than when the scientists are behind you and they're like, oh my God, like this is crazy, we never expected this, this changes everything.

So today we journey with Damien Carrington and a group of intrepid

scientists into the maelstrom beneath Greenland's glaciers where they're hoping

to find answers to one of the world's most pressing questions.

So Damien, this was an epic trip that you've been on and I mean even the journey itself to get there was quite something.

So maybe you could tell me about that joining this expedition, what that initial trip was like, even just that

joining this expedition, what that initial trip was like, even just to get to Greenland.

Yeah, it's a really long way away and it's why scientists rarely go there.
