Summary

The 1st and 2nd Illyrian Wars, fought between the Roman Republic and the peoples of Illyria (approximately modern Albania to Croatia) in 229-228 and 220-219 BC respectively, are often neglected in favor of the more famous 2nd Punic War. The conflicts with Teuta, the "Pirate Queen" of the Ardiaei, and the unscrupulous Demetrius of Pharos marked the first (and certainly not the last) time Roman legions marched upon Greek soil. Dr. Christopher Gribbin joins us to discuss the wars in greater detail, and emphasizes their role in sending the Roman Republic onto a collision course with the rest of the Hellenistic world. Sure. Well, I've really been fascinated by the ancient Greek and Roman world since I was a kid.

1:34.5

I don't know whether it was the aesthetic or whether it was, you know,

1:39.0

this great story of the town being buried in time or what have you. But something about that really resonated for me

1:42.4

and got me absolutely fascinated in the ancient world. So

1:45.7

that's something that always really stayed with me right through my childhood. When I went to
