Summary

As the most prolific of city-founders, the Seleucids sought to dramatically reshape the lands of the Near East and most especially North Syria, which would become the dynasty's new imperial heartland and something of a stand-in for their ancestral homeland of Macedonia. We will cover the creation of these sites, but we'll also assess the impact of Seleucid rule and the response to Greek culture from the vast number of peoples of the empire, whether the native inhabitants of Babylonia and Jerusalem or the thousands of immigrant Greeks who now called these lands home. 0:30.4

In the previous episode, the first of a two-park look at the Seleukid Empire, we spent time discussing the administration of the realm. The Seleucid kingship was transactional,

0:35.4

and expressed itself in terms that could be read as

0:37.7

Greco-Macedonian, Iranian, and Near Eastern. Delegation to those like satraps and local powerholders

0:44.2

was imperfect, and demanded the Peripatida government where the king constantly needed to enforce

0:49.5

his imperial presence among the many cities and territories by visiting them personally.

0:55.2

With the second part, I plan on focusing on the ways that the Salucans transform the landscape of the empire with

1:00.0

the creation of an imperial heartland and populated in the territory with dozens of settlements.

1:04.7

We will also talk about the responses of the immigrant Greeks to their new surroundings

1:08.2

and those of the indigenous peoples who were now faced

1:11.0

with a new political and cultural elite. Let us start with the landscape of the empire.

1:16.8

Before the arrival of the Macedonians, the Near East and Levant were home to several impressive

1:21.4

cities like Babylon and Tyre, so they were no strangers to the idea of urbanization. With the

1:26.9

conquests of Alexander in the

1:28.3

infighting of his successors came the creation and spread of Greek-style cities across the Hellenistic

1:33.4

world. But the Seleukids were unsurpassed in the scale and scope of their building program.

1:38.6

There are over 120 named settlements that can be attributed to the dynasty, with about

1:43.3

70% of them located west

1:45.0

of the Euphrates River. The majority of these are tied to Seleucus I and his son Antiochus I.

1:51.0

And Appian suggests that at least 34 cities were founded by Seleucus, however true that may be.

1:56.0

But new settlements would continue to be built down to the mid-second century.
