Hello and welcome to Tesla Daily on Official Tesla Podcast. My name is Rob Maurer.

0:07.0

My name is Rob Maurer really excited about today's episode.

0:14.0

Joining me is Jimmy D from the Tesla Motors Club's forums to talk about Tesla's

0:18.7

autopilot, specifically the neural networks and what is new in version 9. Jimmy will share a little bit more

0:24.4

about his own background but he recently made a very interesting and informative post on the

0:29.4

forums about some of the things that Tesla is doing with their neural networks and with autopilot.

0:34.6

I'll link to that post in the show notes.

0:36.6

It may be good reference material to follow up this conversation with.

0:40.0

I don't think you really need to read it beforehand or anything like that.

0:43.2

The other resources that you'll find in the show notes are time stamps for different points of the conversation.

0:48.8

We do go very in detail here and Jimmy gives a lot of helpful background on neural networks in general so while I would

0:55.9

recommend listening to the whole thing because I can't label every single point with

0:59.6

timestamps that is there if you do want to skip around a little bit.

1:03.0

The other resource that's also there is an autopilot video that Jimmy references during our conversation.

1:08.0

Lastly, I'll put some links to some other interviews that I've done that people may also find interesting.

1:13.5

With that, let's get right into the conversation with Jimmy sharing a little bit more about

1:17.4

his background.

1:19.0

So I studied this stuff in college a long time ago. So I was in industry for like 40 years and I I had a day job I made a lot of money I didn't need to work anymore so I started I just consulted for a few years and this is back in 2007 and at that point I was getting back into a I was interested in AI and that was something that I wanted to work on. So I worked with some people and we were working on various kinds of stuff and I had this side project that got going.

1:48.0

And then there was this huge, really important sort of earth shaking breakthrough in the neural network world that happened at the time I wasn't at the end of 2012 and I didn't really I wasn't at the time I wasn't paying super close attention to neural networks because they weren't making good progress and I was working on some other stuff that I thought was a better way of solving some of these sort of intractable AI problems that we just have not been able to make good progress on for the last like 30 40 years. And so when I learned about this

2:16.4

these are the image net results at the end of 2012 like I dropped whatever I was doing. I killed off my consulting business and I just started doing stuff full time.

2:23.7

So for the last couple of years, this has been kind of my job, right?

2:27.5

I sort of, I do research on the research that's getting done in neural networks.
