Welcome to the Translash podcast, a show where we tell trans stories to save trans lives.

Today, in honor of Intersex Awareness Day, I wanted to use this program to highlight the ways that intersex and trans identities come together. Now, just so that we are all on the same page here, intersex refers to

those whose bodies, either in terms of genitalia, hormones, chromosomes, or internal anatomy

don't conform to traditional medical notions of male and female.

Intersex people continue to face extreme stigma and oppression, including violent medical

procedures performed on them without consent. The presence of intersex people throughout history,

however, disrupts the simple idea of biological

binaries, of one or the other.

We don't always hear about intersex people and broader conversations about trans and

LGBTQ plus rights overall, and it's way past time to rectify that.

That's why we're spending the entire episode today with Sean Seifle Wall, a tireless

activist in the fight for intersex liberation.

Human beings are like flowers, and there's so much variation.

The problem is, as physicians who see this, feel that intersex should exist in these two boxes,

either male or female.
